THE POTTER

Jeanne vanSpijker began working in clay as a hobby in 1970. By 1979 the "hobby" had gotten out of hand and "Cactus Pottery" was established. Her first kiln and potters wheel were built with plans from Popular Mechanics magazine.

She attended schools in Michigan and Massachusetts, majoring in Art History.

Each piece is individually made, carved, and glazed with the best attention to detail and craftsmanship that I am capable of giving to it. My signature on the bottom of each piece is my affirmation that I am the sole designer and maker.  Each piece is dated, numbered, signed, and copyrighted by me and cannot be reproduced in any form without my written permission.  I make my home in rural north Florida, on a small farm with my family and a menagerie of animals.  My work is reflective of my surroundings.

I became a Christian in 2001 and my scriptural work is the result of a new direction in both my personal life and in my work.

After working with earthenware and stoneware clays for a number of years, I began to concentrate on porcelain for its smooth, pure surface, conducive to the intricate carving and clarity of colors.  Due to the fragility of unfired porcelain, it is a constant challenge to push the limits of the form and the carving.  Once  fired, porcelain is the strongest of the clays and with a little care can last for many generations.
I believe in a person selecting a piece especially for them, and no one, anywhere, will have one exactly like it.
